During the last decade, northwest San Antonio experienced an unprecedented level of growth. In recent years, roughly 50 percent of the population expansion in Bexar County was concentrated on the far northwest side. In an effort to relieve the overwhelmed infrastructure that resulted from this population explosion, TxDOT implemented a series of upgrades; each improved congestion incrementally.

The next upgrade, at the intersection of Loop 1604 and state Highway 151, is called a grade separation project, or an underpass. Route 151 will be constructed under Loop 1604, improving the safety of the intersection and significantly reducing traffic congestion.

Work on the project kicked off April 23, 2012 and is scheduled to complete by mid-2013. The contract was put out to bid January 2012, with Ballenger Construction submitting the low bid at $15,126,839.93, about 8 percent under the estimated construction cost.

Project Update

The bulk of the work completed and in process is related to clearing for the future main lanes of SH 151 leading up to Loop 1604.
